Knowledge of judo athletes on the problems of dehydration in the pre-competitive weight loss process
Abstract
Judo is a sport that divides athletes into categories according to weight and age. In order to face lighter athletes, athletes opt to reduce their weight days before the competition and recover soon after weighing, the main technique being dehydration. The aim of the research was to verify the knowledge of judo athletes about problems arising from dehydration in the pre-competitive weight loss process. A questionnaire was applied with 31 experienced athletes living in the city of São Paulo and users of a school clinic. All agreed to the study and signed the informed consent form. This questionnaire addressed questions about strategies used for weight loss, knowledge about hydration practices and the main symptoms reported in cases of dehydration. Statistical analysis was performed using the IBM SPSS® program. The results show that most athletes consider the strategies used for the reduction of risky body mass for health, however they would be willing to continue to undergo such strategies for a possible improvement in their sporting performance, even if it results in loss of strength, as reported among the main symptom presented. It shows that despite the knowledge, athletes still consider more important their performance as a result of good health status.
