Correlation between the use of supplements and body composition of jiu-jitsu athletes from Campo Grande-MS
Abstract
Introduction: Feeding has a great influence on the physical performance of athletes and there is currently an indiscriminate use of dietary supplements, often without proper guidance. Aim: To evaluate the possible correlation between the use of supplements and the body composition of jiu-jitsu athletes. Methods: Sixty male and female athletes from 18 to 40 years of age were evaluated and anthropometric measures (weight, height, circumferences and skinfolds) were evaluated. A questionnaire was used to analyze their routine of habits, habits food intake and water intake. Results: of the participants in the study, 80% were male. Regarding the use of supplements 50% of the participants stated that they use some type of product. All participants had low water intake. For body composition, mean values for body mass index of 26.2 and 27.6 kg/m2 and body fat 20.4 and 22.9% for groups that used supplements and did not significant difference. Conclusion: The use of supplements did not influence the body composition of these athletes, which shows that the use without an adequate nutritional strategy may not generate expected results.
