Prevalence and methods of rapid weight-loss in judo athletes
Abstract
In combat sports with divisions by weight categories it is common for athletes to use rapid weight loss to fit into smaller categories in order to fight with lighter and weaker opponents. The aim of the present study was to identify the prevalence and methods of weight reduction of judo athletes, both men and women, in Rio Grande do Sul. A total of 48 athletes, 35 (72.9%) of whom male and 13 (27.1%) female, with a mean age of 23.19 ± 6.07 years, who were judo competitors in the year 2016, responded to the Rapid Weigth Loss Questionnaire (RWQL). Regarding the degree of influence in the reduction of body weight, the influence of the judo technician/sensei (55.9%) is highlighted, while in the female gender, the influence of nutritionists (69, 2%). The most used weight loss strategies, regardless of gender, were the decrease of liquids (male = 73.5%, female = 92.3%) and training with warm clothing (male sex = 47.1%; female = 77%). It was concluded, therefore, that the prevalence of athletes who use different fast weight loss methods in pre-competitive periods, regardless of gender, was high. Most athletes use fluid loss, and the demand for nutritional assistance is low, especially in males.
