Effects of supplementation of ômega-3 fatty acids on late muscular pain: a systematic review

Abstract

Delayed onset muscular pain (DOMS) is characterized by stiffness and edema of the muscular bed, pain or discomfort in the musculature to the touch or movement, implying in the diminution of the range of movement, being able to negatively impact the performance and to cause injuries. The objective of the present study was to perform a systematic review of the literature on the effects of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on DOMS. The systematic review was based on the PRISMA method, where all articles were evaluated in relation to the methodological quality of the study, as well as risk analysis of biases to evaluate the quality of the selected articles. A search strategy was formulated to select randomized clinical trials investigating the effect of omega-3 on DOMS. 17 randomized clinical trials evaluating the effect of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) supplementation on healthy adults were identified and included in the current review. The dosage used in the studies was DHA (50 mg - 3000 mg / day) and EPA (300 mg - 3000 mg / day). A decrease in creatine phosphokinase levels was observed in the intervention group in the acute phase but did not obtain significant difference between the groups when the training period was evaluated. Based on the included studies, hypotheses suggest that the test substance can attenuate the post-exercise pro-inflammatory process from the combination of EPA and DHA fatty acids, but there is insufficient information to define a specific dosage capable of attenuating DOMS.
