Bulimic analyses in female athletes of high performance in rhythmic gymnastics in Toledo/PR
Abstract
Bulimic analyses in female athletes of high performance in rhythmic gymnastics in Toledo/PR This study aims at evaluating the predisposition of bulimia in a team of rhythmic gymnastics athletes (GR). The group consisted of 22 girls aged from 9 to 20 years old from Toledo in Paraná. For the analysis of a possible bulimic profile, a questionnaire of the Bulimic Investigation Test of Edinburg (BITE) was used. The questions were about anthropometric data, weight, frequency of meals, medication, standard food and others. The majority of the gymnasts feel themselves with a medium weight. If it is considered the classification perceived of fat and very fat, we have also a high frequency (27,27%), what may indicate a predisposition to bulimia, once about 77% of the sample seem to reveal worries about weight, due to the ideal weight for the practice and competition. Almost one quarter of the gymnasts showed that they felt to be under weight (22,73%) and no one felt much under weight. The participants also mentioned, the majority of them (59,09%), that they did not have any eating problem. A significant number of participants (40,91) mentioned they had eating disorder. Only two gymnasts (9,09%) go on a diet, while the majority (90,91%) do not. It would be necessary to take the athletes to an evaluation with a psychiatric professional to elucidate the diagnostic for eating disorder.
