Abstract

Probiotics have become, in recent years, interesting and increasingly popular as nutritional supplements, especially for reducing gastrointestinal complaints and common infectious diseases. In sporting practice, there is evidence of the potential of probiotics to reduce the incidence and severity of respiratory tract infections. In view of this, the present study aims to conduct a systematic review of studies involving probiotic supplementation and its effects on parameters related to health and training in athletes and physical exercise practitioners. The search was performed in the databases Scielo and Pubmed and the period considered for the review was from 2008 to 2018. Articles were considered English and Portuguese. The descriptors used for the search of the articles were: probiotic, exercise and sports performance. In total, fifteen articles met the eligibility criteria. Treatment with probiotic indicates positive clinical effects and evidence for potential supplementation in exercise. The studies provided results that corroborate the performance of respiratory and gastrointestinal tract infections, as well as the incidence, severity and duration of symptoms. Regarding performance, some isolated benefits were reported, mainly attenuation of muscle damage, muscle recovery and improvement in potency. Therefore, the benefits of probiotics in upper respiratory tract infections and immune system in physical exercise were satisfactory, although, in terms of performance, the results are inconclusive.
