Assessment of pre-competition weight loss conduct of young judo athletes
Abstract
Introduction: The judo has weight categories to balancing the difference between competitors. Judokas use tactics for rapid weight loss (RWL) to achieve their categories. Purpose: The aim was to find which methods were used by judo athletes to obtain an RWL before the competition. Material and Methods: The socio-demographic data, sports characteristics, food aspects, dehydration practice and the association between the period of RWL and emotional issues was evaluated. Student's t-test was used for the descriptive variables and considered a significant difference p<0.05. Results: Thirty-eight athletes (53% male) with 22.9 ± 5.2 years were evaluated and 92% reported that these strategies affect performance. The most frequent complaint was fatigue. The techniques most commonly used for weight loss are food restriction (92%), water restriction (58%), followed by dehydration (50%). Most athletes reported that the orientation came mainly from their teammates (58%). Conclusion: Most judo athletes report a decline in competitive performance due to RWL and used more than three strategies to lose weight, being the most common food and water restriction. The methods orientation came, in most cases, from the teammates.
