Evaluation of the consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acid omega-3 by physical exercises practitioners
Abstract
To improve health and aid in the prevention of chronic diseases, the consumption of omega-3 has been increasing due to its numerous benefits to human health. The objective of this study was to investigate the daily consumption of food containing omega-3 by practitioners of physical exercise at a gym in the city of Pelotas-RS. Fifty adult individuals were interviewed at a gym located in the city center. The sample consisted of 50 regulars with a mean age of 24.64 years, 25 (50%) men and 25 (50%) women. Of the participants, all reported consuming foods containing omega-3s, 08 reported supplemental omega-3s, of which 02 without professional guidance. The main objective of practicing physical activity was well-being, reported by 21 participants. Most participants reported an average training time of one hour. The foods most consumed by the participants were oats, followed by broccoli and flaxseed. The present study demonstrated an adequate consumption of plant-based foods of omega-3 sources, but low consumption of foods of omega-3 sources of marine origin. The results also demonstrated that there is the practice of physical exercise and use of food supplementation without professional supervision.
