Body composition and food consumption of rugby athletes
Abstract
Introduction and objective: food habits and body composition are causally related with the performance and performance of athletes. This study aimed to evaluate the body composition and dietary intake of athletes from Rugby. Materials and Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study with 20 athletes from public schools and living in the periphery of the city of Pelotas. Were measured weight, height, waist circumference, hip circumference and a questionnaire was applied to food frequency. Statistical analyzes were performed in Stata 14.0®, with a significance level of 5%. Results: The mean age of the athletes was 14.89 ± 0.76 years. The majority of the sample was eutrophic (66.67%). The weight ranged from 45.6 to 77.8 Kg, height ranged from 1.47 to 1.65 and the mean BMI was 22.40 Kg/m2. Regarding food consumption, it was perceived low consumption of vegetables, fruits and eggs and high consumption of sausage, industrialized and soft drinks. Discussion: studies with adolescents show an inadequate intake of foods such as fruits, vegetables, and high consumption of unhealthy foods. Conclusion: There is a need for intervention actions aiming at improvements in body composition and nutritional habits.
