Assessment of nutritional status of the association of disabled swimmers of visual Belo Horizonte (ADEVIBEL) -MG
Abstract
The nutritional Assessment is a key factor to diagnose the nutritional status of an individual and essential for development and adherence of a balanced diet. The swimming has been of great importance to the overall development of people with visual impairments. This study aims to assess the nutritional status of athletes in swimming of the “Associação dos Deficientes Visuais de BH”. We evaluated the six athletes swimmers, male and female, between 18 and 35 years in the period from October to November 2008. For the dietary study was conducted individual interview, in addition to dietary of three alternate days of the week. The anthropometric assessment involved the body mass index (BMI) and skinfolds (biceps, triceps, subscapular, Supraspinale) for calculating the percentage of fat. It was observed that all athletes were normal weight, though five swimmers had low intake of calories. The average percentage of carbohydrates consumed was 44 to 55% proving to be lower than recommended (60 to 70%) and average consumption of fat showed values over 30% of the proposed for athletes. As for micronutrient considerable gaps in the average intake of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium and iron were found. The nutrition education of swimmers appears extremely important, as a way to guide the provision of adequate nutrition and correcting eating disorders.
