Influence of caffeine intake on cardiovascular and hemodynamic responses in strength training: a critical review
Abstract
Introduction: Caffeine is a nutritional resource widely used for its ergogenic activity. Its effects result in the reduction of fatigue resulting from physical exertion. However, its ingestion can cause adverse events, including an increase in the excitatory activity of the cardiovascular system. Aim: Since caffeine, as an ergogenic nutritional resource, can be used associated with physical exercise, the present study aimed to carry out a literature review to present and discuss the effects of caffeine intake on cardiovascular and hemodynamic responses during the strength training. Materials and Methods: To achieve this objective, a search was performed in the PubMed database including studies that associated these three factors (caffeine; cardiovascular responses; strength training). Results: As a result, it was possible to verify that caffeine influences the hemodynamic response by modifying factors such as blood pressure, heart rate, double product and heart rate variability, during training and in the post-exercise recovery period. These results were observed at doses of 3-6 mg/kg of body weight, taken alone, without association with other substances, in samples of men, women, normotensives and hypertensives, of different ages. However, the magnitude of these changes did not reach values that would imply a risk to individuals. Conclusion: Therefore, we must carefully observe the use of caffeine in strength training for individuals who have some impairment in the cardiovascular system, since its use promoted exacerbation of cardiovascular and hemodynamic responses, during and after exercise.
