Consumption of supplements by physical activity participants in gyms
Abstract
Nowadays, the concern of improving health and to get a better physique is a reality in society. This reflected on the increase in people training at the gym and on the nutritional supplements consumption. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional supplements consumption by bodybuilders in two distinct academies in Montes Claros-MG. A cross-sectional study was performed, a non-probabilistic sample composed of 94 individuals aged between 18-51 years old, bodybuilders enthusiastics. A validated questionnaire by Vieira (2018) was used, applied in person in two academies in Montes Claros and also online. From all of the participants, 50% were man, the mean age was 26,5 years; 52,1% trained five times a week or more, 92,5% trained for an hour or more and 85,1% had already used some supplements and the most predominant were Whey Protein (85%) and Creatine (77,5%). The main source of prescription was their own initiative with 58,8% and the main objective for them of using nutritional supplements was to gain muscle mass (83,8%). There were significant differences from the use of supplements between men and women, showing that men use it more. In conclusion, there was a significant use of nutritional supplements without the prescription of the appropriate professional. This fact could lead to incorrect use and side effects.
