#SportsNutrition: Study of the content shared by nutritionists in the area of Sports Nutrition on Instagram
Abstract
Social media, especially Instagram, have been used by sports nutritionists to disseminate content and captivate patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of content shared on Instagram by professionals in the field of sports nutrition and physical exercise (SNPE). For the research, a profile without links was created on Instagram. Hashtags were used to search for posts about SNPE. Only posts by nutritionists who declared being from the SNPE area in the bio were selected for content analysis. The content of the posts were analyzed according to the ease of information, clarity, depth, scientific reference and according to the popularity and type of post. From 100 analyzed profiles, 48% declared in their bio to be specialized in SNPE. The most posted contents (n=68) by these were, in descending order: pre and post-training (n=23), supplements (n=22), weight loss (n=15), and hypertrophy (n=8). Contents about hypertrophy were the most adequate and clearest, unlike the contents about pre and post-training. The contents about supplements were the ones that showed the better deepening of content. Regarding the type of post, the carousel format was the most used and presented a higher frequency of deepening the information. Although less frequent, the reels format showed content with the highest rate of adequacy. In conclusion, most of the the contents of sports nutritionists on Instagram were adequate, but did not show scientific reference or were profound, which may raise doubts in the target audience.
