Abstract

Beta-alanine supplementation has been seen as an important resource to improve physical performance. Studies have shown that when supplementing individuals with beta-alanine, there is an increase in the carnosine content that works as a buffer to control the pH, preventing fatigue and increasing performance. In this sense, the objective of this work was to carry out a systematic review on the effects of beta-alanine in resistance physical exercises. Searches were carried out in the PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus databases for clinical trials carried out between the years 2017 and 2022. The descriptors used as the search key were: beta-alanine, supplementation, physical exercise and resistance. The study used the Preferred Reporting Items in Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses framework. The systematic review included 10 studies, it being evident that the positive effects presented in the vast majority of studies demonstrated benefits from its use, making it clear that chronic supplementation of beta-alanine is deposited in fast fibers, favoring high-intensity anaerobic exercises and short term. Despite some results showing that there was improvement with beta alanine, even so there were some impediments that could lead to errors, due to the lack of a better evaluation and measurements such as lactate and muscle carnosine, which due to the mechanism of action of beta alanine, would be necessary for a more reliable result.
