Effectiveness of phosphatidic acid supplementation in resistance training individuals: systematic review

Abstract

Despite more than 50 years of research, the field of sports nutrition continues to grow rapidly. While the focus of traditional research has centered on strategies to maximize competition performance, emerging data over the past decade has demonstrated how the availability of macronutrients and micronutrients can play a prominent role in regulating cell signaling pathways that modulate skeletal muscle adaptations to endurance and resistance training. The objective of this study was to carry out a literature survey gathering information from the electronic platforms SciELO and PubMed on the effectiveness of phosphatidic acid supplementation in gaining muscle mass in resistance exercise practitioners, in addition to evaluating the physiological mechanisms of action of phosphatidic acid. This is a systematic review study that used the PICOT strategy and followed the PRISMA strategies for its preparation. Using the PubMed and SciELO database, 29 articles were found in total, 29 articles belonging to PubMed and 0 to SciELO. Of the 29 articles found, 10 associated phosphatidic acid with resistance training and were used in the previous reading. It is concluded that phosphatidic acid supplementation together with a resistance training protocol may have a role in muscle strength and lean tissue accumulation. More research should be carried out seeking to standardize the intervention protocol and also the analysis methods, since there was no consensus on a significant difference between the studies cited.
