Effects of creatine supplementation in the case of Taekwondo practitioners: a systematic review
Abstract
Introduction: It is believed that creatine is an interesting supplement for combat sports as it helps to improve anaerobic capacity, gain strength in fighters' upper and lower limbs and apply blows in decisive moments. Objective: To understand the effects of creatine supplementation in the case of taekwondo practitioners. Materiais and Methods: This is a systematic review of the literature carried out from February to May 2023 and conducted according to the PRISMA methodology. Works published during the last 10 years in Portuguese or English that were able to answer the guiding question, in addition to being available in their complete version, were included. After searching the databases, 54 articles were found. Of these, 3 of them were included in this review. Results: After analyzing the studies, it was possible to realize that the scientific evidence currently available is mixed in its support for the use of creatine as a beneficial ergonomic resource for the practice of taekwondo. Short-term ingestion of creatine improves the performance of the anaerobic intermittent kick test, average power and peak power of trained taekwondo athletes, but can harm the athletes' body composition and plasma triglyceride levels. Conclusion: The literature presents few studies relating the use of creatine by taekwondo practitioners and based on a general analysis of the studies, the findings are sometimes positive and sometimes negative, which makes it difficult to properly prescribe and use it in the field. sports.
