Abstract

To evaluate the effect of the pyruvate in weight and body composition in healthful women with normal body mass index (BMI). Methods: 56 healthful women with normal BMI (18.3 - 25.0 Kg/m2) and balanced diet who practiced physical activity at least 2 times per week had been selected retrospectively in the Sector of Nutrition of the Instituto Mineiro de Endocrinologia. Patients had received calcium-magnesium pyruvate once daily in a dose of 0.05 g/Kg/day after a dose of saturation of 0.1 g/kg/day during 10 days. The total duration of pyruvate use varied from 13 to 38 days. The measures performed had been weight, height, abdominal circumference, cutaneous folds of triceps, abdomen and thigh. Results: 79.6 % of the patients had presented ponderal loss that varied from 0.1 to 3 kg. Reduction of the cutaneous folds was observed in 89.8% of the patients and in 74% of them there was reduction of the abdominal circumference. Conclusions: The results indicate that, in healthful women with normal BMI, the supplementation with pyruvate promotes the reduction of weight and reduction of the fat mass.
