Abstract

Objective: The objective of this review is to critically analyze the studies on the effect of supplementation and / or antioxidant diet on oxidative stress induced by exercise. Literature Review: Selected works from 1992 to 2010, totaling 48 articles (43 international, 05 national). The systematic review demonstrated that there are few studies showing positive results with antioxidant supplementation on oxidative stress induced by exercise. Improper use of antioxidant supplements can prevent necessary adaptations and beneficial exercise and interfere with hormesis. Conclusion: Physical exercise can lead to oxidative stress, but the overuse of antioxidant supplements to try to control it may interfere with adaptations and not necessary. Thus long-term studies on the actual need additional antioxidants to practitioners of physical exercise are necessary and extremely important, trying to establish parameters for the use of supplements and protocol standards.
