Effects of supplementation with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on body composition
Abstract
The objective of this review is to show that supplementation with CLA may actually becomeonemore nutritional resource associated with exercise to improve body composition in humans. It is emphasized that studies in humans with the most diverse populations and samples. The study consisted of individuals of both genders, with normal weight, overweight or obese, sedentary or trained, which contributes to the diversity of results. CLA was administrated mixture of two predominant isomers, trans-10, cis-12 and cis-9, trans-11. Daily doses ranged from 0,7 to 7,2 g/day and time of supplementation of 4 weeks to 24 months. Noted that doses above 3 g/day CLA has more positive response to change body composition. The mechanisms which CLA decreases body fat and increases lean body mass are not completely understood. Studies lasting more than 1 year showed that the CLA dose was safe and well tolerated. However, evidence in humans is currently mixed about if supplementation has a significant effect on body compositionor not. Differences between the studies may be related to the isomeric mixture of the supplement, the effects in specific tissues and the low statistical power. Overall, it appears that CLA helps reduce BF and SAD in humans, but a minimal effect on BMI or BW. By the time, there is a better accepted on thissupplementation in obese females. But moreresearch with larger duration and better application of the method, with greater control on diet and exercise and more precise handling of the isomers are needed to determine the optimal amount of isomer of CLA that has a greater influence on body composition.
