Strategies for weight loss in the national judokas
Abstract
Introduction: athletes of fights commonly use the strategy of weight loss before competition in order to compete in lower categories. Thus, they seek to benefit by reducing their weight before the official weigh and trying to recover it in a short period of time between weighing and fight. However, this practice can be dangerous without proper professional supervision. Objective: the objective of this study was to investigate theprevalence of judo athletes who use methods of weight loss in pre-competitive period, and what are the strategies used for weight loss and what is the perception of athletes in relation to this procedure. Materials and Methods: 33 judo competitors at the national level (24.5 ± 4.6 kg.m-2) answered a questionnaire with questions regarding the use or not of weight loss strategies, and what are the strategies for weight loss often used in pre-competition period. Results: 93% use methods of weight loss pre-contest. 48% reported that the method affected performance. The strategies more used were intense training, caloric restriction and dehydration, respectively. Conclusion: we conclude that the amount of judo athletes who use weight loss pre-competition is high, and the methods used seem to decrease performance in competition, as reported by the athletes investigated.
