Abstract

Fatty acids are important components of cells, playing a key role for structure, energetic functions, signal transduction among others. Long chain polyunsaturaded fatty acid from n-3 and n-6 family, linoleic and alpha-linoleic acid, respectively, are essential to human body, because its deficiency causes functional deficit for brain and body development. They cannot be synthesized by the mammals and so must be provided by diet. Physical activity is a stimulus which also modify immune system response. Low-moderate exercise training, enhances immunosurveillance, while, intense exercise training leads to immunosuppression. Indeed, elite athletes who practice intense training are more susceptible to infections, in particular those from upper respiratory tract (URTI). N-3 fatty acid can modulate the immune system response and intense physical activity leads to infections. One hypothesis to be considered to attenuate this phenomenon is to investigate if the supplementation with fish oil would modify the infection rate. The information about this approach is poor indicating that more research is needed. In this study, we shown that there are many studies relating n-3 fatty acid and immunitary system effect, physical activity and immunitary system, however there is no study addressing, n-3 fatty acid- immunitary system- physical activity, which needs to be investigated.
