Self concept in recreational gymnasium users, nutritional supplement user
Abstract
Objective: To relate the consumption of nutritional supplements by these particular group of men to possible disturbances of self-image, such as muscular dismorphia, and tendency of using strategies that can cause health damage. Method: Forty-five individuals of the masculine sex between ages of 15 and 48, who attend academies of gymnastics, were interviewed in the city of Campina Grande, Paraíba, in 2007. A questionnaire with 20 discursive questions was applied in the attempt of tracing a profile of these practitioners, involving some issues, such as satisfaction with the body image, use of anabolic steroids, among others. Results: Amongst the interviewed ones, 67% were consuming nutritional supplements. It came to notice that the statistics of supplement consumers were higher than the statistics of non-consumers in many important items of this study: 80% against 60% practice only weight-lifting, 53.3% against 13.3% had a predisposition to exercise aiming only at the gain of muscular mass, 23.3% against 6.7% fiercely avoid physical activities that can possibly contribute to the loss of muscular mass, 20% against 6.7% would possibly use strategies to gain muscular mass even if they would cause health damage and 30% against 6.7% had already used anabolic steroids, respectively. Conclusion: The individuals that consume nutritional supplements have some characteristics that are normally linked to cases of muscular dismorphia. Although they weren’t diagnosed with this syndrome, they happen to be strong candidates to develop this disturbance of self-image.
