Abstract
The vast majority of fighters presentbody weight above the limit of their categories, making use of strategies for reducing body mass in a short period of time. Athletes use a series of aggressive health strategies such as restriction of food and fluid intake, use of plastic or rubber clothes for inducing sweating, exercise in hot places, increase the amount of exercise performed. This practice can be even more disturbing because the athletes have little knowledge and lack of professional supervision for the implementation of effective strategies that do not cause harm to the performance and to their health. Therefore, the present study is aimed to investigate the strategies and the most used means of rapid weight loss among judo athletes from a club in São Paulo. Participants were 39 judo athletes, male and female, aged between 9 and 55 years. All individual answered a questionnaire about the methods used in rapid weight loss and who directed the conduct such methods. The results showed that the strategies of rapid weight loss such as sleep without dinner, run using plastic bag and go without eating during the day were the most used even by younger athletes. We conclude that athletes make use of various methods for quick weight loss a week before the weigh-in all age groups, without guidance from nutrition professional.
