Use of glutamine in different physical activities: a study of systematic review
Abstract
Aim: To study the use and effect of glutamine in different physical activities. Methods: A systematic review in Medline, PubMed, SciELO data, in the period May to October 2014. Results: We identified up to eight articles analyzing the results of which 5 were combined and three descriptors were entered manually by searching the references the selected articles. Four articles were glutamine supplementation and placebo, among them, one group using glutamine, protein and placebo drink. The four studies supplemented after exercise. A non-supplemented, but the authors suggested examining the usefulness of monitoring the relationship between glutamine / glutamate for tracking tolerance to training athletes in team sports. Only one article found differences between the study groups, while others have found no differences in outcomes studied with the use of glutamine supplementation. Conclusion: Consumption of glutamine supplement probably will not show substantial benefits in terms of restoration of fluid balance and prevention of immunosuppression after exercise, althoughthere are some hints of a possible role of glutamine in stimulating anabolic processes, including muscle glycogen synthesis and protein. The evidence available so far is not strong enough to warrant a recommendation to the athlete to use a glutamine supplement.
