Coaches show most knowledge about basic nutrition than sport’s nutrition
Abstract
Introduction. The trainers are common sources for athletes who seek nutritional orientation since they are the closest professionals to them due to their daily contact. Aim. To assess the nutritional knowledge of coaches. Matrials and Methods. All the participants (n=100) completed a nutrition knowledge test, which was composed of four categories: Food Source; Function of Nutrients; Nutrition and Physical Activity; and Supplementation. Results. The coaches obtained a percentage of overall accuracy of 55%.On the Sports Nutrition category, smaller percentage of correct answers (p<0.05) were found compared to the Basic Nutrition category. When comparing the categories, the coaches showed more knowledge about Food Sources and less about Supplementation (p<0, 05). Conclusion. The present study shows that the coaches have poor nutritional knowledge, mainly related to Sports Nutrition and more specifically about Supplementation.
