Abstract
Introduction: Swimming is an exercise that promotes health and wellness, and nutritional status and food consumption have direct influence on the performance of this sport. Objective: To describe anthropometric and food intake of adolescent swimmers. Materiails and Methods: The sample consisted of 27 athletes 12-17 years of age teenage swimmers at a sporting club in the RS. The variables analyzed were age, sex, weight, height, body mass index,% fat and dietary assessment by 24h recall. Results and Discussion: Of the 27 adolescents, 66.7% were male. Regarding nutritional status, it was observed that 92.6% of adolescents were eutrophic and in relation to% BF percentages ranged from good to excellent. Comparing anthropometric and food intake between genders, it was observed that the weight and potassium intake were significantly higher among boys (p <0.001). Consumption of macronutrients, there was inadequate protein intake, which was significantly above the recommended levels (p <0.001), and lipid intake, which was significantly below the recommended level (p <0.001). Regarding micronutrient intake was significantly lower than recommended only phosphorus and vitamin E (p <0 .001). Conclusion: The sample of adolescent swimmers this study had adequate anthropometric profile according to the classification for age. And the food intake was adequate for most of the variables analyzed, except for the low consumption of lipids, potassium and vitamin E, and high protein intake.
