Abstract

The study aimed to characterize the anthropometric profile among high level Brazilian swimmers. Thirty athletes, 15 men (20.5 ± 2.3 years; 84.2 ± 8.3 kg; 188 ± 6 cm) and 15 women (21.9 ± 4.2years; 61.6 ± 6.6 kg; 170 ± 6 cm) were studied. Anthropometric measures such as weight, height and skinfold thickness were collected before the competition. The body composition values were: for men, body fat proportion, 10.0 ± 3.2%; muscle mass, 75.7 ± 6.8 kg; for women, body fat proportion, 19.9 ± 2.1%, muscle mass, 49.2 ± 4.9 kg. Among men, the swimmers showed higher height and body weight related to athletes from other countries. However, their body mass proportion was adequate according to the swimmers’ reference, suggested high muscle mass. Among women, all data were similar comparing to others studies among Olympic athletes. These results showed that the body training for high level swimmers allowed body characterizes similar in relation to other countries athletes.
