Association between nutritional status, physical fitness and body image of children and adolescents
Abstract
The objective of this study was to describe and correlate the nutritional status, degree of physical fitness and body image perception of children and adolescents participating of social project in Santa Maria-RS. Assessment of body composition (body mass index, body fat percentage and waist circumference), hemodynamic parameters (blood pressure and heart rate), physical fitness (cardiovascular endurance testing, flexibility and abdominal strength) was performed and perception of body image in 65 volunteers, 7-17 years. We used descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation and percentages), ANOVA, the Kruskal Wallis test, the Pearson correlation and linear regression, with significance level of 5%, through the SPSS 18.0 program. It was observed that only obese individuals have higher mean waist circumference (82.82cm), lower flexibility (32.32cm) lower in cardiovascular performance (775.05m) and higher systolic blood pressure (115.31mmHg). Eutrophic are satisfied with their body image and others are unhappy. Regardless of nutritional status, everyone wants to have body image corresponding to the same figure. There were associations between nutritional parameters, physical and body image. It is concluded that the percentage of body fat, waist circumference, physical fitness, blood pressure and body image are correlated with the nutritional status of participants in this social project. In these parameters, the behavior of the obese differ from normal weight, with results that give health risk.
