Nutritional profile of adolescents that practice football
Abstract
While the knowledge that a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of excess of weight is already known, the magnitude of sports in the food choices to prevent obesity in adolescents remains unclear. The study aimed to determine the profile of food intake and body composition, relating food intake with overweight frequently in male teenagers attending a football school in southern Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study, with 340 adolescents aged 10- to 16-year-old, enrolled in a football school located in a city in southern Brazil. Anthropometric assessment was conducted to determine the nutritional status and adiposity. Subjects answered a food frequency questionnaire, based on the document "Ten steps to a healthy diet for the family". The prevalence of overweight and increased adiposity was 30% and 36.5% respectively. More than half of adolescents had a poor intake of fruits and vegetables, half had a low intake of dairy products and 30% reported a high consumption of fried foods. Water intake was considered suitable for 65.8% of the sample. Adolescents with overweight had a more adequate consumption of sugar when compared to normal weight. The adolescents that play football on a football school have had a high prevalence of overweight and poor diet behaviors. Those results showed that be physically active may not be associated with good diet patterns.
