Level of satisfaction with muscular appearance in musculation students in Ubá-MG gyms
Abstract
Introduction: Since adolescence men seek an increasingly muscular body, bringing about the emergence of a new picture of body image disorder, better known as Muscular Dysmorphia. The individual with this disorder sees himself as having a small, lean body, but in reality is muscular and large. Aim: To evaluate the level of satisfaction with muscular appearance in bodybuilding students. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 60 men, with a mean age of 27.08 ± 5.74 years, who practiced bodybuilding in the academies of Ubá-MG. The Muscle Appearance Satisfaction Scale was used to evaluate the satisfaction that individuals have with their own image. Data analysis was performed through the descriptive exploration of variables and Spearman's linear correlation to verify the relationship between variables. Results: In relation to the level of satisfaction with muscular appearance, the overall mean of subjects' scores was 44.33 points, which classified them as "satisfied most of the time with muscular appearance", in which 65% Were in this classification. A regular correlation was found between the scoring of the scale and the days of weekly practice (r = 0.485; p = <0.001). Conclusion: In the present study, a large part of the patients were satisfied most of the time with their muscular appearance. Thus, the need for preventive behaviors is emphasized among those who were dissatisfied.
