La cafeína y su efecto ergogénico

Resumen

La ingestión de cafeína se remonta a muchos siglos atrás. La cafeína es un compuesto natural en muchos alimentos y bebidas que consumimos a diario, como té, café, refrescos y chocolates. Es un estimulante del sistema nervioso central, la función cardíaca, la circulación sanguínea y la liberación de adrenalina. Junto con la cafeína, la adrenalina estimula una amplia variedad de tejidos, potencia la contracción muscular, aumenta la tasa de descomposición del glucógeno muscular y hepático. Está bien establecido que la cafeína puede aumentar las concentraciones de ácidos grasos libres en reposo antes del ejercicio, pero parece haber cierta controversia con las concentraciones séricas de ácidos grasos libres durante el ejercicio. Como algunos de estos efectos, en teoría, pueden mejorar el rendimiento, hasta hace poco el Comité Olímpico Internacional prohibió el uso de esta sustancia. Debido a la habituación y la dificultad para controlar la ingesta, la cafeína está a punto de ser eliminada de la lista del COI.
