Β-alanina y su acción ergogénica nutricional en el ejercicio: evidencia actual

Resumen

Los hallazgos más antiguos ya muestran que la suplementación con β-alanina provoca un aumento de las reservas musculares del dipéptido carnosina (β-alanil-L-histidina) hasta en un 50%, que es un tampón de pH intramuscular que ha demostrado ser muy eficaz en ejercicio. . Sin embargo, los estudios más recientes ya muestran que la suplementación crónica de β-alanina se deposita en las fibras rápidas (tipo 2) entre un 30-100% sobre las fibras lentas (tipo 1) lo que favorece la realización de ejercicios anaeróbicos que se caracterizan por una alta intensidad y corta duración. Los ejercicios con β-alanina más favorecidos resultan ser aquellos en los que predomina la vía anaeróbica láctica que demandan una mayor liberación de ácido láctico, donde el sistema tampón de la carnosina parece prolongar el ejercicio frente a los iones de hidrógeno (H+) de disociación del ácido láctico (LA) lo que puede causar acidosis muscular, causando dolor y provocando fatiga. Por tanto, parece necesario conocer los estudios clínicos en humanos para comprobar la eficacia de la β-alanina como recurso ergogénico nutricional.
